I wanted to make sure we wouldn't commit a faux pas by lobbying the committee members directly (as opposed to just our personal representatives in the house). I asked a former Lt Gov of Texas if this was kosher. His response:

"You're a citizen, aren't you? Have at it!!"

:-) (smiley is mine - he doesn't emoticon)

So...

Here is a link to the House Committee on Transportation - it shows all the members, their photographs, and links to their individual webpages:
================================================== =======

http://www.house.state.tx.us/committees/list81/470.htm

And here are direct links to the email pages for each of the committee members. Just click each link, paste in your message to each person, and type in your contact info. Definitely more work than addressing a bulk email, but I can sympathize that they don't want to drown in spam.

I've always heard that personalized messages from citizens have more impact than a cookie-cutter form letter. knows *we* like getting personalized responses from them instead of form letters, right? I'd copy/paste your verbage to each rep; the important thing is that each member gets a different take from each citizen.

The points I'm hitting with them are:

i) safety for the motorcyclist
ii) mobility - EVERYBODY benefits, not just the motorcyclists
iii) ancillary benefits: reduced pollution, fuel consumption, congestion, wear & tear on the roads, etc by making two-wheeled transportation more attractive.

again thanks, good info Rhen.

For those curious, these are the four that voted against SB 506.

Nays: Huffman, Ogden, Patrick, Shapiro

Dan Patrick voted against it... might keep that in mind when his time comes around.

Update: main update will be from ulric probably, however we chatted as watching online in the FoxAustin website. :-)

Points
1. Was biased against lane splitting. Didn't potray in favorable light
2. Mentioned stats about accidents rising tremendously in California with big bold print, and mentioned in an almost under the breath fashion about "reduction in rear end collisions"
3. Had some cruiser fellow proclaiming it was death to do it from Austin... no credentials other than didn't like the idea.
4. Had intelligent fellow from motorcycle show (landers?) that was VERY smooth in presenting idea... deserves a thank you email if someone can find it.

Overall negative presentation through slanting the small details and showing selected youtube videos that show wrecks and lane splitting that was done too fast... not cool. Not happy with it, we need to show some more rising support with the info listed above if we want a shot at this. This is "motorcycle history" in the making, since it is a major step for recognizing motorcycles as a legitimate help and transportation in congested traffic!

Please TAKE SOME STEP and be active or with this kind of publicity we'll truly have it flounder.

Okay, I just finished emailing all 11 house transportation committee members! used the links I posted above.

I recommend using your own words, but if you'd rather copy/paste, that's better than not emailing them at all. Here are mine in case anyone wants to use them:

=====================

I'm writing to ask for your support for SB506, relating to the operation and movement of motorcycles during periods of traffic congestion.

This bill doesn't cost anything, and doesn't require new taxes. It passed the Senate committee 7:2, and the full Senate on a 27:4 vote.

It legalizes an efficient practice conducted in every major foreign city in the world, as well as California.

It provides three important benefits:

i) Safety - gives the motorcyclist the option of waiting out red lights out of danger of a rear-end collision

ii) Mobility - allowing motorcycles to 'filter' to the front enables more cars to move up, and more cars will get through an intersection during each traffic light cycle.

iii) Ancillary benefits - by encouraging more use of two wheeled transportation, we'll consume less fuel, pollute less, reduce congestion, and have less wear & tear on the roads.

The effects of this bill will help all motorists, whether they're on two wheels or four. And, again - it doesn't cost anything to legalize this procedure.

Thank you for your consideration on this matter.

think it would help to mention that a large base of motorcylists who have never before been involved in polictics are starting to get involved to contact their representatives for the first time. This is a significant issue to many and the support shows that the texas government is willing to listen to their constituents?

I know that Dan Patrick had quite a few call him and still voted no. I DOUBT he had people calling against it. Most are callign to support I imagine. SO to my opinion he voted out of his own personal bias, not what his constituents really wanted... this means I'll for the first time actually register and I'll support his opponent. He didn't represent me in something small that cost him nothing and politically would seem to be a really "non" issue. That means to me, he's out if I have anything to do with it.

I put together a support lanesharing legislation mini-forum together... with a mini chat box at the bottom. I'm thinking that a lot of people here may be tired of the continual thread going back and forth, maybe this will help with organization between the multiple forums since we are all working together... check it out over @
http://lanesharing.forum-motion.com/index.htm
AGAIN i'm not promoting ANYONE leave this one... lol but it will HELP COORDINATE between MULTIPLE forums, members is self authenicated, and the chat box is on the bottom for anyone who cares to real time it.
check it out.

I called my rep's office today. They told me to go ahead and send my letter to [my reps] Capitol office ASAP. They asked which bill number it was and the first thing he did was look up the Senate vote for the bill. So, like rhenriksen posted in #190 I think it's a good idea to include the Committee and floor votes.

It's also good to include your credentials if you have any (MSF, ERC, etc) and how many miles you commute per year. Personalize the letter a bit instead of just sending them a carbon copy. I didn't include any mention of racing or track time though. I didn't want any reference to racing or tracks in my letter.

FWIW - I wrote my Senator before the Senate vote. They sent me a response letter in the mail.

That's good info. I agree about posting credential and sources. Multiple phone calls and followup emails can't hurt... keep their inbox busy.

update on house sponsor posted @ http://lanesharing.forum-motion.com/

Please refrain from copying and pasting all the info at other sites, please encourage visits to our group by linking to the site for updates. I'm taking the time to try and call the Committees and raise awareness, and if we build our membership when action is needed, the update can be sent much faster than trying to go between dozens of forums.

FURTHER update posted as the previous agent I spoke with gave me incorrect information. I spoke at length with another person there assigned to it that corrected me with the right info.
