I use this site. If you pay you can get your score and all. I pay a monthly fee to have it kept up with for my wife and I. They email us every time something changes or every time I get a hit. You can do a one time fee for a check on one or all three reports.

no because you're not a merchant, you can look at your credit and not create an inquiry. Inquiries decrease your score 2 - 5 points. So whenever you apply for a credit card or loan, you're decreasing your credit score, not just when you check your credit.
