Things you need to know
The new basic ridercourse curriculum for TX is almost here; in fact, some sites are already doing it. In addition to two days of training, a 3-4 hour e-course will be required to pass. In light of this, some helpful suggestions:
1.) When you book your course with your provider, expect an email with a special code that will allow you to do your e-course at no additional charge. These codes are assigned to providers by TX DPS and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, and each must be accounted for. If you lose your code number, it's imperative you contact your provider in advance of the class to retrieve it. 2.) It will be mandatory with the new course that the e-Course is completed prior to showing up for your first day of class. The state is allowing NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule. It will be your responsibility to make sure you've successfully completed the e-Course within the prior 30 days, and you must show proof of completion to be allowed entrance. If you show up at your class without completion of the e-Course you will be sent home, NO EXCEPTIONS ALLOWED, and you will most likely have to pay again to take the class. 3.) Your provider will send you all the information you need to complete your e-Course and what you need to know for attendance at the remaining 15 hours of class. It will likely be in an email. It will be up to you to make sure you check your email, and (most importantly) READ the email to make sure you have met all requirements to attend and know when and where to go. It is not possible for providers to personally text every student to ensure they have done what needs to be done, and providers do not send out specific class information via social media. 4.) Class is expected to start on time to allow for reasonable completion of class requirements in the allotted time. Showing up late will mean you are sent home, and will very likely have to pay again for a class. 5.) The state no longer permits re-testing for anyone who fails either the knowledge test or skills test. If you fail, you will need to retake the entire course, and there will most likely be an additional charge to do so. 5.) Please understand that providers are contracted or licensed by the state, and must follow the rules of the DPS and MSF or risk losing their license/contract. There is still time to take the course under the old curriculum, but that is rapidly dwindling. January 1, 2018 all state providers MUST use the new curriculum, no exceptions. If you have questions about all this, feel free to call me at 281-897-7121 and I'll answer as much as I can. This transition time is challenging for all of us, and your patience is appreciated. As Keith said, be sure to CHECK and READ all the emails you are sent. I've been switched to the BRCu for a month now and people are still not following the instructions. He is very correct in that you WILL NOT be allowed to attend if you do not bring the certificate.

Several sites in the Houston area have now transitioned to the new curriculum. Be sure to get your eCourse done before showing up for your first class session! (*Note: this does NOT apply to 3-wheel basic ridercourses or Total Control Riding Clinics!)
Expect tuition increases at many sites after the first of the year. If you can, take your class with your preferred provider as soon as possible to avoid price hikes. Some providers still have a limited number of classes under the old curriculum which does NOT require an eCourse to attend. See your provider's website or call them for more information. |

Got to get the word out. We've already had people not read emails and show up to class without the required ecourse certificate. Nothing we can do but send them home....the state provides no other option. Hate to do that, but we can lose our contract/license if we don't. I still have a few classes left that don't require the ecourse, so if you don't want to bother with it, call me or visit our site. 281-897-7121 or 2381-889-1464.

The latest
All training sites in Houston now use the new Motorcycle Safety Foundation basic ridercourse curriculum. Be aware of the need to get that eCourse done before you show up.
If you want to do standby and show up last minute to enroll for a class, you'll need to do an eCourse on your own and bring the certificate with you to class. You can sign up for (and pay for) an eCourse at msf-usa.org. It'll cost you $19.99, and the eCourse completion certificate date must be within 30 days of the course you take. If you sign up for a basic ridercourse with any provider, the cost of the eCourse is now included in your tuition, so there will be no additional charge to take and complete it. ***There is no longer a knowledge test in Texas for the basic ridercourse. Once someone takes the eCourse, they have fulfilled the knowledge requirement for the basic ridercourse. And here's good news: that is available in Spanish or English! |

From what I've been hearing from the DPS MSU, the test option will probably be changing. Seems they have found out some folks aren't doing the eCourse themselves (I've had a few admit to having someone else take it for them). The MSU is considering have the training sites administer a written test again on the first day of the course at the beginning.

As far as I've heard, there is no changes in the IRC. Probably because the IRC is not MSF, but Lee Parks. There is talk of the MSU allowing the MSF BRC2u to be used as a 1 day licensing option, but not until sometime in 2019.

re: TCIRC
No change. One day, on your own bike. Fun, enlightening course that will make you a better rider and help you get your license.
