Things you need to know
The new basic ridercourse curriculum for TX is almost here; in fact, some sites are already doing it. In addition to two days of training, a 3-4 hour e-course will be required to pass. In light of this, some helpful suggestions:
1.) When you book your course with your provider, expect an email with a special code that will allow you to do your e-course at no additional charge. These codes are assigned to providers by TX DPS and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, and each must be accounted for. If you lose your code number, it's imperative you contact your provider in advance of the class to retrieve it.
2.) It will be mandatory with the new course that the e-Course is completed prior to showing up for your first day of class. The state is allowing NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule. It will be your responsibility to make sure you've successfully completed the e-Course within the prior 30 days, and you must show proof of completion to be allowed entrance. If you show up at your class without completion of the e-Course you will be sent home, NO EXCEPTIONS ALLOWED, and you will most likely have to pay again to take the class.
3.) Your provider will send you all the information you need to complete your e-Course and what you need to know for attendance at the remaining 15 hours of class. It will likely be in an email. It will be up to you to make sure you check your email, and (most importantly) READ the email to make sure you have met all requirements to attend and know when and where to go. It is not possible for providers to personally text every student to ensure they have done what needs to be done, and providers do not send out specific class information via social media.
4.) Class is expected to start on time to allow for reasonable completion of class requirements in the allotted time. Showing up late will mean you are sent home, and will very likely have to pay again for a class.
5.) The state no longer permits re-testing for anyone who fails either the knowledge test or skills test. If you fail, you will need to retake the entire course, and there will most likely be an additional charge to do so.
5.) Please understand that providers are contracted or licensed by the state, and must follow the rules of the DPS and MSF or risk losing their license/contract.
There is still time to take the course under the old curriculum, but that is rapidly dwindling. January 1, 2018 all state providers MUST use the new curriculum, no exceptions.
