USA women's basketball team is country to beat in Rio

The pressure is on for USA women's basketball.

The American women have won Olympic Gold five consecutive times and are in the hunt to make it a cool half-dozen.

Plus, they're on an incredible streak right now, having won 41 games leading up to the Olympic Games in Rio.

They know they have a target on their backs.

Olympian Tamika Catchings told KPRC Channel 2 the competition "all play their best games against us."

"You want to be the country, you want to be the team, that takes the USA out," she said of the United States' opponents.

Sisters Chiney and Nnemkadi Ogwumike of Cypress and Houston's Brittney Griner are on the short list to make the team.

"Right now we have that pool of 25 and you could probably literally pull 25 out of that, send them to the Olympics and they would have a chance to win a gold medal," Olympian Sue Bird said. "That's just how good our country is right now in this sport."

On Sports Demo night, the USA women took a spin in Paralympic basketball wheelchairs, which proved both challenging and inspirational for these athletes.

"It was amazing to see how well they manipulate those chairs, and how quickly they can move on them and stop and turn and lean and block shots, so I was so impressed," team hopeful Elena Delle Donne said.

Gearing up for Rio, the Brazilians may, in fact, be the toughest competition with the rowdiest fans looking to knock the USA team off its pedestal.

Bird added, "I know they're going to have that noisemaker thing, I forget the name ... . They're going to be loud and that's exciting! That's what you want right?"
