Sena Bluetooth 10U Headset

Sena's overall unit fits snuggly into the Shoei NeoTech helmet, as well as many others.

We’re hooked on technology, more specifically Bluetooth helmet headsets. Sena Technologies is one company we’ve definitely grown fond of over the years because not only are the high-quality products easy to use, they're developed with riders in mind.

After Sena released the 10U, we were eager to get some test time in our Shoei Neotec Modular helmet. And the cool thing about the 10U’s sleek design is that you still get all of the functions you want: audiophile-worthy performance for your tunes and conversations in a stealthy setup that fits completely within the interior recesses of some of the world’s best helmets. Currently the 10U System is available in five different models for the Shoei GT-Air, Neotec and J-Cruise, Schuberth C3/C3 Pro, and Arai full-face helmets, with more to come in the future.

Sena's bluetooth controller fits nice and snug on your handlebar for ease of use.

The 10U also comes with a neatly designed Bluetooth Handlebar Remote Control, which clips right onto your handlebar for ease of use and adjustability. However, if for some reason you don’t remember your Bluetooth controller, all functions are still easily navigated by the two buttons that mount inside the helmet as part of the main unit.

Sena's 10U Helmet controller

First thing’s first: the 10U is incredibly sleek. Completely unnoticeable at first glance, the 10U was developed to work seamlessly within the above-mentioned helmets’ infrastructure so that there’s no bulbous modulator strapped to the side of your helmet. In other words, the unit itself is hidden toward the back of the helmet and routes easily under the NeoTec’s helmet liner.

Sena's 10U Speakers are sleek and comfortable.

Second, the speakers have been completely redesigned and fit very well in place in between the cheek pads and the helmet liner/helmet straps. On other Bluetooth headsets we’ve tested, you’re basically wedging a hard piece plastic in minimally wrapped foam, which isn’t a very comfortable feeling after a full-day’s ride. Not the case here. In fact, there was very little fatigue overall with the 10U setup.

After putting a few miles on the road, we had some trouble with the handlebar remote control. We found the joystick toggle to be a bit more difficult to control at speed. Whether blasting down the freeway on cruise control, or around town at slow speeds, we found it very difficult to skip to another song in our playlist by toggling the joystick forward. Instead, we’d end up turning the volume up way past 11! Or a couple of times, we found that hitting certain buttons on the 10U buttons inside the helmet left us without any function at all, almost as if we hit the self-destruct button. However, a quick MacGyver-esque move to factory-reset the unit via paper clip put us back in business.

Overall, the Bluetooth Control is a cool design, but lacks some execution. Maybe it was our limited time spent with the gadget before testing, so we’ll give it another go-round on our next couple of trips and report back to you if we love it or hate it.

Overall, we are pleased with the Sena Bluetooth 10U, and we can't wait to get out on the road and answer more annoying blast our favorite tunes while ripping the twisties!
