stolen car registry?

my car was stolen about a month ago and i called the Nassau Bay police back once to see if they had found it. they told me not to call anymore. my dad was telling me he has heard of people having to pay large impound bills because their car was found out of country or whatever and not reported, so i'm wondering who should i call to know if my car has been found or do i not need to call anyone at all?
