Hutchinson awarded prestigious Torrens Trophy

The Royal Automobile Clubs Torrens Trophy has only been awarded nine times

MULTIPLE Isle of Man TT winner Ian Hutchinson has been award the Royal Automobile Club's prestigious Torrens Trophy for outstanding determination, courage and overcoming adversity to win many TT's.

Hutchinson has overcome many obstacles over the past few years after undergoing over 16 operations since 2010 after a crash at Silverstone left him with a severely injured left leg just after winning five TT’s in a week.

Hutchinson has since recovered and will line up in the Pirelli National Superstock 1000 Championship this season with Tyco BMW in addition to his road race campaign.

The Yorkshire-based rider was judged by the Club's Torrens Trophy Nominations Committee to receive the award. Other nominees included the country's first Grand Prix World Champion since 1977, Danny Kent, World Superbike Champion Jonathan Rea and World Speedway Champion Tai Woffindon.

The Torrens Trophy has only been awarded nine times to recognise an individual or organisation considered to have made an outstanding contribution to motorcycling in Britain. '

'I am very proud to win the Torrens Trophy and be recognised by the Royal Automobile Club,' said Hutchinson. 'It has been a fantastic year for me and I would like to extend a huge thanks to the team at Paul Bird Motorsport and Team Traction Control Yamaha and to my family for all the support through my days in hospital and recovery."

Barrie Baxter, Chairman of the Torrens Committee, commented: 'Motorcycle racing can be a very punishing discipline, and Ian Hutchinson's inspirational journey is a testament to that.

'From nearly losing his leg and having to endure over 30 gruelling operations to returning to the pinnacle of a sport which dealt him a cruel blow and win multiple TTs must be one of the sport's most courageous stories.'
