It was a 1:31.111 set towards the end of a hotly contested afternoon session that landed him there; .139 of second better than his compatriot Marc Marquez on the Repsol Honda.

Before Lorenzo took top honors, the afternoon session started with a battle between Marquez and Lorenzo’s teammate Valentino Rossi, the pair taking turns in the lead. Ultimately, Marquez’ fast morning time held off teammate Dani Pedrosa by .127 of a second. Rossi was shuffled back to fifth while Ducati’s Andrea Iannone squeaked by to take fourth.

Although Rossi’s grid position has already been set, the Italian is looking to get a fast start and stay on pace to make sure he is ready to charge through the pack on Sunday. He ended the day .364 of a second off of his championship rival Lorenzo.

The times as a whole are close, with the top 12 within a second of the leader. Will be interesting to see what tomorrow’s qualifying brings…
