Texans shift to regular-season mode; QB Savage needs MRI

The preseason is over and now it's  time to focus on the Texans opener with the Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 13.

Following the Texans finale’ with the Cowboys the focus shifts to trimming the final roster to 53. Louis Nix III, a third-round pick in 2014, is reportedly among cuts made Friay. Nix, who played at Notre Dame, battled injuries and conditioning issues in 2014 .

The first round of cuts came earlier this week when Texans coach Bill O'Brien cut the roster from 90 to 75. The deadline is Saturday at 3 p.m. when the Texans will officially announce their moves. In all, 22 players will be sent packing or perhaps in a few cases sent to injured reserve.

O'Brien held a conference Friday to update the state of the Texans, including the injury status of third-string quarterback Tom Savage who hurt his shoulder in the loss to the Cowboys on Thursday night.

"He definitely did something to his shoulder," O'Brien said.

He added that he didn't believe it would require surgery, but the Texans are still evaluating it. Savage still needs an MRI and is still talking with the medical staff.

O'Brien wasn't sure if the team would seek a third quarterback for the active roster or attempt to sign a quarterback to the practice squad.
