Texans' last practice in front of fans, Mallet takes turn with first unit

KPRC 2 Sports Producer Adam Wexler was at Houston Texans practice Wednesday morning and here are his observations:

Out working 1's Mallet w/ a couple plays backed up to the goal line. He made two nice throws. The second one was a really good out route to Cecil Shorts. He was able to corral it and then turn up the field along the sidelines.

Tom Savage started the drill right before that heading in on the goal line inside the five. He made a nice throw to his left over the DB and into the arms of Jace Davis. Savage was excited.

A couple nice pass break ups but DB work one-on-one drills near the goal line.

Mallet made a couple of nice throws to the corner end zone to his right, but both incomplete. One Davis didn't get turned around fast enough and it went right through his hands. The other one landed right in Keith Mumphrey's hands, but he couldn't hang on either.

Jaelen Strong showed strong hands of the back of the end zone kitchen pass from now pulling away from the defensive back.

One-on-one drills on the far field side with a long 45-50 yard throw to Tony Washington went out and got up over the top of the defensive back. Landed on each other but he hung on for the touchdown.

Fullback Jay Prosch looking like the battering ram he is supposed to be. He was able to get into the chest of Carlos Thompson on a run and knock him back down off his feet.

11-on-11, Mallett with the ones against a decent rush throws a nice ball across the middle of defense right into the belly of Alan Bonner, who squirts in for the touchdown.

Travis Labhart gets the fans on their feet with a nice catch over rookie Kevin Johnson.

A couple of drops from Washington. First on a throw just a touch behind him. Second one hit him right in the hands. Good throw. Overall, four straight incompletions from Mallett, though all four targets got at least a hand on the ball. All with the ones.

Brian Hoyer missed Strong, badly overthrown to sideline. He followed that with an overthrown deep ball. Darryl Morris had the only chance to catch and he ran underneath it for the interception. Intended for Mumphrey.

Charles James with coverage deep on Davis ball over thrown back in the end zone. James stayed down initially, but was able to jog it off and then wanted to get back out there but they waved him off. He quickly got his right ankle taped up and went back to practice.

Savage got picked off by Akeem Dent. Suffice to say defense liked it.

They ended practice with one play to win the game situation. Mallett found Shorts back left corner. Shorts made a great play on the ball for the TD.

Two's up next. Fumbled exchange with Hoyer and James Ferentz.

Then the 3's. Savage tried to hit Khari Lee, who was just coming out of his break and the ball sailed past him.

Players who did not practice today: Jumal Rolle, Jeoffrey Pagan, Mike McFarland, Xavier Su'a-filo, Lonnie Ballentine, Anthony Denham, Arian Foster, David Quessenberry and Reshard Cliett.
Terrance Parks came out of practice early.
