SCOTTISH rider Andy Lawson has died following an incident during the second Supersport race at the Ulster Grand Prix yesterday.

The following statement has been released on behalf of the Dundrod and District Motorcycle Club:

“It is with much sadness and regret that the Dundrod & District Motorcycle Club confirms that the person who was fatally injured during the Ulster Grand Prix was Scottish racer Andy Lawson.

“24-year-old Andy from Arbroath, who was a newcomer to the Ulster Grand Prix, was taking part in the second Supersport race when the tragic incident occurred.

“An investigation by the PSNI, MCUI and Dundrod & District Motorcycle Club into what happened is now underway."

Lawson's family were informed of his death, but insisted that the following races continued as planned as it is what 'Andy would have wanted'.

Noel Johnston, Clerk of the Course at the Ulster Grand Prix said: “I am incredibly saddened by the news that Andy has succumbed to his injuries and my condolences are with his family, friends and race team. He was a lovely guy and an up and coming rider, definitely one to watch.

“I had a quick chat with him just before that Supersport race began and he told me how much he was enjoying his first experience at Dundrod, and that he was taking it easy while he learned the course.

“I can’t tell you how hard it is to continue the event in those circumstances but Andy’s family and race team were determined that the remainder of the event go ahead as planned. They believe it is what Andy would have wanted and we wanted to respect that.”

The PSNI are also appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them on 101.

From everyone at Visordown, we would like to express our deepest sympathy to Andy’s family, team and friends at this sad time.
