Gilbert Renteria gears up for trials for Rio 2016 Olympics

At an early age boxing became Gilbert Renteria’s life. In fact, he first put on the gloves at the age of 3.

“I grew up around it. And the first time putting on a pair of gloves, I fell in love with it,” said Renteria.

“When he was real small, in fact still in diapers, we’d get on our knees and do hand pads with him,” said his trainer Curtis Morton.

The 18-year-old Renteria caught the attention of legendary boxer and Houston native Termite Watkins. Watkins, a longtime friend of Morton, freely offers his advice to Renteria.

“To see somebody that you’re able to put something into … I’ve known him for all these years and I’ve put my little bit (of advice),” said Watkins.

Renteria is already a national champion and will be taking his elite skills to the Olympic trials in December.

“I stay ready at all times,” he said. “The hard opponents are coming and tough competition. We always have to be ready.”

Things will get real come December as a ticket to the Rio games will be on the line. But the Renteria camp is exuding confidence as he prepares for the biggest fight of his career.

“We’re going to see how far this boy can go. And we know the sky is the limit with Gilbert,” said Morton.

“If he does everything he’s supposed to do, he will win this championship,” said Watkins.
