hmm... A quick search and browse of a couple of pages (yes, more than one!) of results and I'm seeing the term "polar vortex" appear in scientific papers as early as 1986. I'm surprised it's taken 28 years for the panic to catch on. They were probably just trying to scare people into reading their boring- paper anyway. "The area of the stratospheric polar vortex as a diagnostic for tracer transport on an isentropic surface" ??? Ain't nobody got time for that.
get a clue before you start posting ....look up what those papers are describing first of all. Oh its over your head? Well then STFU
They are describing what is happening right now in the weather which is a Polar Low pressure aka for color and media sake "Polar Vortex".

I think it was just a bad traffic morning. I'm usually on the road by 5 am and this morning at the I10/45 interchange it was pretty backed up(normally a heavy traffic area, but not at 5 am)

I was waiting to pass a wreck or something...but nope, just people driving slow for no apparent reason.

I tried that with my Texas hooker search, but it only reduced my search results from 16,000 to 15,965

Looking out the window right now... looks something like this...

People in Texas just don't know how to drive (even without snow).

Even with hurricanes / tropical storms, something you think they would be relatively accustomed to, are they easily set into a panic.

So did all the media outlets conspire to use the term "Polar Vortex" or did one broadcast meteorologist use it, and did all the other networks and local affiliates just jump on his bandwagon?

I don't give a what they're discussing in the paper otherwise, the term was used to describe this exact weather pattern. It's obvious that the use of words with more than two syllables in the paper put it out of your reading comprehension level.

Let me spell out my only point(s).

To refute specific previous claims:
- It is not a "new" term coined to cause fear. I'm not saying it's use hasn't been exploited recently, only that it was not made up for this purpose. It is a term, describing a specific weather pattern, that has been used in this field previously.

It's hard to troll with actual work to do... not enough time for this today. Tomorrow should be a little better when the weather is making me work from home.
