old age takes another rider.

I don’t usually reply or post in these kinds of "rider down" threads unless I personally knew the rider, but I can say "I knew this rider my entire life." He wasn’t a member of this or any other forum and I doubt if any of you ever met or rode with him, but when I visited his grave site and I saw that he had already purchased his place marker and in the top right corner of the bronze it has a man sitting on a Harley with the inscription “Live to Ride” I knew I had to post something here of the passing of a fellow rider.

You see he was my father.

And no, he didn’t go down by some texting teenager. Or even his own negligence. I believe it was just old age, he lived the best and the fullest life that he knew how. Just over 2 weeks ago, 19 yrs to the day of my mother’s death. My father walked into the hospital with a severe respitory infection that had already turned into pneumonia in one lung and it wasn’t long before it spread to the other. And within 2 days he was put on a ventilator (which he told us to never allow) and given little chance of ever coming out alive. On Tuesday of this week, while I and other family were standing by his side, his life sustaining devices were removed. And his spirit was allowed to pass from this plain of existence, on to the next. Today we laid his body to rest next to his mom, his 2nd wife (my mother) and my younger brother.

Before I was born he and my mother rode a Harley. When I was about 10 or 11 he bought a 75 GoldWing.

Said "He got tired of having to carry around a tool box." Then for many years in the late 70’s and early 80’s he and my mom were very active members of The San Jacinto High Rollers, Humble and Baytown chapters.

Ah the weekend poker run’s, camping, swimming, riding motorcycles, hanging out with a bunch of other families doing the same.

Then in the late 90’s he purchased a 95 Dyna Lowrider.

This is about the same time I purchased my first streetbike. We only rode together a few times and his bike set for the last few years, but I am happy to say that in the fall of last year. I got his bike back into rideable condition, then, he on his and me on mine. I took him for one last ride. Over to my oldest brother’s (the new owner of dad’s Harley) a few miles away.

No gear, topped off by, no socks and those old people crushed velvet house slippers on. I wonder what those people on the Beltway thought of him?

edit: May he always "Ride In Peace"
Never ride faster than your Angel can fly!

Awesome story ... I lost my dad when I was 13 ... It's great to see someone so close to their father and enjoying life. Too many people harp on petty and never keep that relationship. I will not be sorry as your dad lived a fruitful life ... Went out on his own terms and looked life and death straight in the eyes.

Follow his lead sir and you to will enjoy the same. brining me to tears while I'm at work ... Great story man.
