Rode dirt bikes a little when I was a kid but really wasn't that into it. I preferred bmx and skateboarding. I had a couple bikes when I was about 19 or 20 but never kept them for long because I would sell them during the Indiana winters because I was always broke. Just used them to get around. Got into vintage bikes after a few friends got some old school bikes when I was about 22 (pic of the first one I did below, man I should never have sold it). Basically just bar hopped and chased girls on them. I would say that I really first got into riding about 6 years ago when I hurt my back and could no longer skate. Needed something for my crazy fix and bought my first fast bike.

One morning I woke up with an incredible urge to ride. I can't pin down any one thing that caused it, the urge manifested itself from a host of thoughts kicking around my head.

Two weeks later I took MSF. Two weeks after that I bought a used (not yet beater) ninja 250. The rest is history.

My dad always rode when he was younger and when my sister and I were little, but when he got into medical school, he sold them all and never rode again. Meaner and I were forbidden to ride with anybody- ever! I was always too afraid to challenge that... and I thought the motorcycle would try to kill me.

Fast forward to 33:

My hostage bought a little Nighthawk 250 from a friend of his (neither of us had ever ridden before) and it sat in my garage for about four months. One day I told my sister (who rode with her man) that we should take the class and learn how to ride this things. So we did.

I've been riding four years now and I love it. I ride nearly everyday - 35 mile commute into downtown for school.

when i was a kid sportbikes looked like the ultimate toy for grown ups. as i got older i fell in love with the fact that with the twist of a wrist i could blow by 99 percent of the vehicles on the road. its my time of freedom.

i always thought knowing how to ride a motorcycle could be a useful skill.

friend wanted to take a basic rider course to make getting his m endorsement easier a few years ago, and he invited me.

took the course and didn't get my license until a year later (lazy). bought my ninja 250 from my brother's friend and i've been riding since then. put around 8k miles on it my 1st year. sumbitch sips fuel. 50mpg > 20mpg

You have forgotten. Dad was in med school went down thanks to a cager. Rashed his thigh from knee to hip. Got rid of the bikes and forbid us to ride.

Remember how scared we were at MSF?

Was walking too expensive for you? With a little bit of planning you would be amazed at how little you really need motorized transportation.

Although where is the fun in that!

I started riding for a few reasons. I put it off for 18 years and 7 years after I sold my car I figured no time like the present. Riding a motorcycle is everything that driving a modern automobile no longer is: uncomfortable, loud, dirty, dangerous, smelly, and fun. It is more engaging than driving a modern automobile and uses a lot less gas.

I grew up riding mini bikes. Natural progression was to get a motorcycle. I was 16 at the time, saw a Yamaha 500 in the paper located in another town. Had a friend of mine drive me out to it. The owner of the bike took me for a ride on the back to show that the bike was sound. We did the deal and after he got his money, I asked him how do you ride it. He showed me the clutch, the gas, how to shift and the brakes.....a 60 second instruction on how to ride the bike. Told him to put it in the street and point it in the direction I needed to go. Hopped on and been riding ever since.

I remember when I was a little kid [ maybe 3rd grade ] I was riding in the truck with my mom & dad & a bike passed us & my mom told my dad that when I got old enough ,she would get me a bike.
For some strang reason , her words always stayed in my mind & sure enough , at age 13 , she got me my first bike , brand new TS 125 susuki.
Since then , I have had other bikes & never been without one.I love to ride & hope I always will.
btw , now I am 52 ,thanks mom ! RIP

In no important order
  • Thought that riding a motorcycle was a good skill to have.
  • Meet people and discover a different world
  • Wanted one since I was a kid but from teens to 23 years old I didn't care for them much
  • Motorcycles started looking beautiful around 24 years of age
  • Started having dreams of riding and feeling the freedom when recalling my dreams
  • I like the feel of the cool wind when driving my car in the fall and spring with the windows down so a bike was a must have!
