What kind of bike to get?

A friend of mine is loking to pick up an inexpensive bike, and has no experience whatsoever. My first streetbike was a ZR7S, which did have some pep to it, but I had a dirtbike as a kid and I think that helped me a lot. Since I started riding two wheels at such an early age, I can't relate to what it would be like to ride with zero experience, so I am asking for perspective from those that were in my friends shoes, and what they would have bought as their first bike in hindsight. Thanks.
For a minute there I thought we were in trouble.

i had an old air cooled 750-4 honda.
i think anyone who was heavy into bicycles should pick up mc's fast and dosen't need to start with a midget 250
you may hate jerry sandusky but at least he drove slow through school zones
