zx12r opinions?

Ive been thinking about picking up a zx12r. How do they handle for being such big bikes? I'm a big boy and find the standar 1000cc sport bikes too uncomfortable for my build... Are there any basic repairs or faults that i should look out for when looking for a used one? Ive ridden one before and it was pleasant to ride, as well as comfortable.

They make a fine sport-tourer.

I love mine. They are decent handlers stock, but way better with some minor upgrades. If you want to check mine out give a holler!

A shorter wheel base and just a tad lighter than a Busa.

I am the same way.. to big and long for a 1K for any length of time.

04 and up have radial brakes, which are just a tad better. Check the stator plug for oiling, behind the left side of the seat/side cover. Valve cover gaskets leak if not assembled correctly. 02 and up have some minor changes to frame geometery and handle just a tad better.

You can also search under my username on Youtube and find some vids from our last Deals Gap trip

Absolutely love mine. I'm in the process of setting it up for a touring bike.

Plus side: It's definitely a lot more comfortable than my 10r.

Down side: Doesn't handle nearly as well on a curvy road. It's good, but not as easy going as the 10. There's a very discernible difference between the two.

Holler if you want to take it for a spin.

I was eying an 04 on craigs recently... Thanks for the info bros! I really am not a fan of the busa, it just looks too behemoth like for my tastes.

is this a problem with just daily driving or track bike/hard use? Are there any fixes?

The 2000/2001 had weak baskets, that didn't like drag strips or hard abuse. They changed the hub to oil better and also changed the clutch pack in the 02 and up and they are fine for street use/abuse.

My 02 has over 22K on the stock basket, all street.

If you plan to drag it, plan on investing in a billet basket at the minimum.

Yeah a stock motored ZX12 with a good pipe, PCIII and custom map will make 175rwhp and spank most gen 1 busas with the same mods....They are a little soft in the low end, they wake up with -1+1 gearing. They don't top speed with a busa due to worse aeros but at the drag strip, they will out MPH a gen 1 busa unless the busa has cams.

ZX12s handle well also....short wheelbase, good suspension and brakes for its day.....The only thing that sucks about the ZX12s is working on the motors is a PITA.....Also many of the early ones had oiling issues and kicked rods but....if they are still running today, they are likely the ones that were built right. Clutch baskets did suck in the early ones but you can get a Muzzys basket relatively affordable if you plan on drag racing or clutching up wheelies often.

They are great bikes.....
