speedo is limp like wet noodle. wat do?

for those of you following along at home, i, the bold and daring, not to forget quite dashing, intrepid year-round bike commuter, have been out of a bike all summer. the forks have been and the bike has been sitting in the garage all summer with fresh tires. last week i got the forks fixed and back on and this week i rode to work. it was great to be back on 2 wheels. i only had 1 problem, or so i was to think. my lightbulb that illuminates the speedo had burnt out.
today while riding home, i watched as my speedo needle wavered at around 45 or 50 mph. when i shifted gears, it fell quickly, and gave a limp, half hearted throb around 10 mph before it came to rest at zero. when i stopped at lights or for a few minutes to go WTF and scratch my chin in ponderment, it would work briefly afterward, same story though, i would go, and the speedo would work. around 50 it would do the dramatic death scene all over again.
i stopped at a gas station to get a little bottle of lube . i poured some of the lube onto the speed sensor thingy (technical term) because i had no clue what to do, other than guess that the sensor wasnt turning, and could use some friction reduction.
that did nothing.
my only thought is that when put the front end back together, i squeezed the sensor by over tightening the axle bolt...? does that sound about right?

Sounds like you improperly installed the speedo drive when yo ureinstalled the front wheel.
Typically on the SV's it'll destroy the inner plastic drive.
Thankfully they're not expensive.

This should say exactly what you need to do to fix your "problem"
