i do gp shift so i take my foot off the left peg after i get the right gear.

I have no idea why they do it, but it has been done for years. Hopkins used to do it in the 500cc races and someone else (I forgot his name) used to be made fun of it in WSBK about 5 years ago and has since stopped doing it. Rossi just made it the 'in thing' to do.
