^ im guessing you pay the same amount for your car per month on maintenance as you did when you first purchased it? i understand that it still requires maintenance and that it is not accomplished for free but for the rates to go up and up year after year makes no sense. guess what i think doesnt really matter anyway. they will keep charging those rates and i will continue not using the sections that charge.

they are also toll lanes . . . its rtarded. HOV some hours, EZTAG others, i think you can choose to pay the toll during HOV lanes if you are driving solo. all very confusing and i rarely saw people using it when i was driving deliveries around out there

i like using them too i just dont like paying. sometimes the tollway is worse. and i also think if you pay then you shouldnt be given a ticket since they were built to get to places faster. i think we should all get helicopters. then we can get places faster and w/o traffic

I hear yah. I live in the Heights area but work in the Woodlands so I ride up there using the Hardy. Much better than 45 with all of the traffic and contractors that use 45 to get to the Woodhood. Last year a contractor dropped a ladder and the truck in front of me ran over it. I had to dodge right to avoid and then checked my pants when I got to work. Got an EZ tag the next day.

Your logic doesn't make sense. Maintenance cost for my car goes up as well. Same as for the road .

sorry it may not have come across clearly when i typed it but intermission has it right. i pay 370ish per month on my note. maintenance does not cost me that much for the entire year. and the price i pay for the vehicle will eclipse what i pay for maintenance over a 10yr period. i know maintenance goes far beyond picking up the trash on the side of the road and spraying for weeds but what they charge now is a bit much. there is a large segment of the working class that pretty much have to take the toll road or would tack on an additional 1-2 hrs of drive time. they will continue to pay because they have no choice.

Yes,but doesn't the hardy only have two tolls? Not like westpark you can't go 2 blocks there another toll.

I always wondered why bikes didn't have a cheaper toll than cars. I mean 2 wheels do less damage than 4. Isn't that why they charge extra for trailers and tandems?

The beltway was paid off years ago. The beltway is actually the feeder roads and is free to use. The tollway is the tollway. I could go into lots of detail about this. I actually did some work for HCTRA a few years back and my brother helped design the newer tag. I actually designed the mailer that everyone got and learned quite a bit about HCTRA (Harris County Toll Road Authority) - which is just a business name. No different than if you opened a bike shop called Harris County Motorcycle Shop. Sounds like it's owned by the county, but it's a privately held business. HCTRA buys land, builds a tollroad, and agrees to build a feeder system and help maintain it. Did you know - Hempstead rd/hwy is going to become a tollway, just like Westpark Tollway and travel from 610 to Beltway. The HOV on 290 is also going to become a tollway. There is all kinds of other tollways they are scheming up. Wait till they start widening 290...traffic is really going to get crazy. A company by the name of Transcore is in bed with HCTRA on all of the electronics behind the EZTags. I wonder why they are issuing the old brick again? It has a battery and is active to some extent. The slim ones are passive. And they do not register quite often, that is why they maintain the surveillance on license plates so they can charge you. There was a lot of problems when it first launched. Maybe that's why they are going back with the bricks.

So if the tollroad is private land, how do cops give tickets on it? I am likely completely ignorant on laws regards private property (like parking lots and such) but I was of the understanding that you can't get tickets on private land (which is why it's a to get in a wreck in a parking lot.)

On another note, I received a notice from HCTRA informing me that I had run three tolls. I have a TxTag (big brick) and always keep it in my backpack. I have my plates registered with them, as well.

From what I understand the red light camera things are a civil deal, not criminal. That's not like an officer pulling you over and physically writing a ticket.
