purpose of a speed hump

I figured this question would have been asked many times, but nothing came up in a search. I just got 2 new A* 1pc suits one has a speed hump on the neck and the other has 3 strips of padding. I've had some say its to protect my neck in a crash and others say its for aerodynamics. Don't see it helping in a crash and if its for aerodynamics I need a bigger hump becaise of my big melon head.

Purpose of a speed hump? Cause a nooner or a quickie are just as much fun as slow humping.

Take it from the pros: http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=126907708058

And also, on most suits available to us regular riders, the hump has a hole, wich allows air to come in while youre in a tuck to help cool you down.....or at least thats what I know

It's a long video, but I would respond as Igor did starting on 1:10 or at 1:45.

It does make a difference over 180, I concur.

Plus it saved my back when a truck rear ended my at HMP; hurt my tailbone a bit.

I also kept more then anyone else in the back lol

I'm pretty sure there's a third reason that hasn't been mentioned.

Without a hump, you get an area of low pressure directly behind your head as well as turbulent flow. This causes your head to want to be pulled back. Now you have to fight that force with your neck muscles as well as stabilize your head.

By adding the hump, you come closer to creating a teardrop shape, have less stress on your neck, and reduce drag forces. Less stress on your neck, less fatigue, and better lap times especially in a long race.

*Disclaimer* Not a racer, just an engineer.

Speed humps are there to slow people down who are driving to fast through parking lots.
