Thanks LilRowdy1- I was looking for someone to confirm some of the info I had - I didn't think about the wicking actually sucking moisture off the leather.. that sounds logical... kind of like a heat-sink on a computer.

In order for wicking to happen that way, you would have to have a fair amount of water flowing through the garment. I don't believe that leather would flow that much water.
No offense, I'm sure that the info was listed as stated on some website, but realistically, leather just isn't that porous.
I can believe the part about using fringe as little ropes to tie things etc.

As for why people wear them on coats these days? Tradition, style, they like how they feel when they flap in the wind? Those are about the only answers I see.

i HAVE my handle bars wraped with leather 3/4 from the rizers toward the swithes and grips..then small bradded tassels about 4 inch ...everbody says it looks good...with the Dream catcher theme of the bike...I guess really it goes with each individual likes or dislikes.
It ain't sissy no means....lot of difference between girl bicycles with plastic streamers...and black rawhide leather ,althought if they are too long they do look gauty..
