So I've been working at a fabrication shop lately and I've done some rides that could be debatable.

I always gear up for my commutes to-and-from work. Usually, I am in full leathers and race boots, or if I'm chilling I'll have on my Kevlar lined Moto jeans, Moto boots, armored jacket... Etc.

Anyways, when I'm at the shop working, I'm dressed to beat the heat. I'm in gym shorts, muscle shirt, and sneakers. Sometimes I need small parts from the auto parts store... So I put on my helmet, my riding gloves, and my backpack... Straight squid!

So, I'd like to know... Who all rides with little gear on and why? Is this tolerated?

I'll run to the store without my jacket and helmet. No shorts and flip flops though. Never more than a couple of blocks.

I was watching a YouTube video and the host was saying anyone who rides with little gear, is going to DIE! I was like, well that's over the top...

I'm the same way... Only a few miles and no wilding out... Maybe a rev bomb, if there's a hot chick or more

I might be a big ol' puss, but Ive tried riding with little to no gear, and I just feel too vulnerable for it to be enjoyable. Ive skipped the jacket (still had long pants, boots, gloves and lid) for a quick ride to the store like you mention, but I just feel naked.

And while I respect a rider's decision to not wear a helmet, it has never been a draw for me. Cant do it.

Walmart is just a mile down the service road. I like riding there with no shorts. Lots of looks. Trying to turn on this little Mexican cashier. I think it's working.

HOWEVER - I almost always have earplugs. Wind noise.

I think we are all guilty of riding around the corner w/o gear. But if something does happen, its going to suck royally.

To the end of the road and back with boots, jeans, t-shirt and gloves, if working on a bike at home and need to do some simple rolling test under power.

Otherwise never ever without at least boots, jeans, padded jacket, gloves and helmet. If not jeans then 2 piece lowers.

Never without full gear.

Not even to test ride after working on said bike at home.

Never.

Its simply not worth it.

Ever.

I dress for the occasion but just tooling around screw a bunch of leathers. Leathers are for race tracks. highways are not for racing or "spirited rides" . Obey posted signs and you got nothing to fear !!

yeah i know its boring BUT its the safe thing

If true then here is a simple test to prove it.

Have your significant other drive your car/track/suv/tractor/wagon at 5mph while you hang out the door/off the running board and ram your open hand and naked knee onto the road surface.

Now repeat the same test at 10mph, 15mph and 25mph. throw in a last test at 35mph or what ever the prevailing posted speed limit sign is for good measure,

Please be so good as to share the results.

Gary Busey bumped his head off a curb and almost died... there is no speed at which falling is safe. About 17 years ago I washed out running an inside line. I wasn't even going fast, but I still hit my elbow hard enough to make it swell up like a black and purple balloon, and that was on a freshly groomed track in loam. Imagine concrete? I'll pass.

I’ll go down the driveway (1/4 mile) and to the stop sign at FM road (3/4) mile with only jeans, boots, gloves for a test. Anything else, armored jacket and pants, boots, gloves, and helmet. Just FYI only 4 driveways on county road - all pasture

On the other hand...
I was out for a little joy ride a couple years ago. Headed east bound on the tollway feeder, did a u turn under an over pass. Thought I was Valentino for a sec. Front washed out and I slid about 60 feet, on concrete. Only going like 45mph.
I had a dime sized scrap on my left knee.

Thank , I was dressed for the crash and not the ride.

Nah, it was still a pretty silly statement, because if you crash head on into a truck you still stand a better chance of surviving and making it out alive if you have gear on vs not having it on. I have personally witnessed someone crash at speeds in excess of 100mph, wearing full race leathers, and a quality FF helmet, right into a culvert and get thrown 20' into the air Yammienoob style. They got life flighted out of safety but walked away almost injury free, except for being stiff and sore. Wear your gear.
