Kelsey at TWS (Texas World Speedway) - speed on front straight

Maybe CDill or one of the other cmra f1 racers can answer this...

Was surfing youtube and found an old race from Danny Kelsey at TWS (Texas World Speedway). His speedo is showing 180+ on the front straight. If it was anybody else, I might not believe it.

Is he really hitting that speed or is that speedo error due to a sprocket change?

I remember a thread a few years back that stated that top speeds for top expert riders were around 155/160ish. That being said, these days, liter bikes have an extra 30-40 hp so, maybe but I doubt it. Also, remember that at those speeds, speedos are off by +/-10%. Hence the 170+ title of the video.

Speedo error. My top speed on GSXR superstock built motor was around 165 gps. This was on a good day running Mid 1:49's. I'm sure the fast guys are up to 170ish.

McBain posted the math somewhere that he got 186 or so in one of the races. He used known trap speeds from other racetracks with RPM and tire circumference data to come on the conclusion.

I was at that race and would guess both Danny and Eddie were going 170 down that straight.

Fwiw - there were weeps coming it of the track just as the riders leaned over for turn one. of steel.

this was from a different TWS (Texas World Speedway) Round

Quote:
At Mid-Ohio, Kelsey was regularly at about 170mph on the official trap speeds with 16/44 gearing and the AMA Control tire was slightly shorter. At Texas World Speedway, with Kelsey hitting the rev limiter entering turn one with 16/43 gearing and a slightly taller tire, this would put the top speed at around 182mph entering turn one.

Using a calibrated radar gun (laser) a few years ago, the fastest trap speed recorded was 168mph by the fastest rider on a heavily built 1000.

The GPS lap timers, while pretty accurate, are not all that great; that said they are reading around those same speeds on the front straight. There's only so much room on that straight to get up to those speeds, not to mention that they're (mostly) at lean angle. Bill Guthrie's BMW got a reading around 170mph on his GPS a couple years ago.

Ty Howard borrowed Dirk Anderson's ZX10 one year. We slapped a GPX timer on there and he touched 169. If I remember correctly he was in the 43's. I'd guess the speeds are higher now but 180 is unlikely, IMO.

Shane Turpin was on a WSBK Ducati one year. If 180 is possible that would have been the bike and rider to do it.

Interesting info. Just can't imagine anything in the 40's much less a 1:43.

I think that is just an overly optimistic speedometer. We all know the OEM gauges are typically off by 5-10% which makes the true speed of that 180 reading about right. I was able to do :49's as a prov-nov with my yellow shirt riding an ill handling '02 R1 with nothing but a pipe and a powercommander. Then got moved to the Expert class and learned a lot.

The best video to Kelsey IMO is the one that he run a 1:46 on the first lap on TWS (Texas World Speedway). Just WOW!
