The "itis" has struck after many years

hey y'all! New here and some advice is greatly appreciated. I haven't ridden in 30 years. Dropped a crotch rocket when I was 19 ended up with broken ribs and collar bone. I have ridden briefly a few years ago in and around my friends neighborhood. For some reason I feel the need to get back on. My kids are grown and out of the house and grandkids come by on occasion. Need to get the boss out of the house some times and just GO,,, I have been told to simply get what you want to ride and not worry about size. I am looking for used, decent mileage and nothing too pricey! I'm 53 y/o. 5' 10" and about 220. Thinking about a street glide, heritage, road king or tri glide or trike conversion. The budget will most likely be less than 20K so I think a tri glide is out but who knows. Again, any advice is welcome. Thanks for reading

You do you, but I would suggest a $5K motorbike in the 600 to 700 CC category to make sure you like it, give your self a chance to brush up on your riding skills, figure out what type of motorcycling you are interested in (I am into Adventure riding), and give yourself a chance to figure out what gear you want and need. This will also give you the time to look for your prefect bike. Good luck.

Not bad advice. Buy a cheap(er) shadow or something similar and spend some time re-familiarizing yourself. If your going to drop it at 5mph in the driveway or a parking lot, best to not do that with a Harley. Odds are you could sell it a few thousand miles later and break even or near.

Howdy, inseam and mindset are more important than those stats. PP offered some sound advice.

I'm 59 and think I'm 39. After @35yr hiatus, bought my bike 2yrs ago this month and have ridden 35K. Very happy with it but knew nothing of ADV bikes until after buying. Can't afford 2 bikes so I sometimes wonder if I missed the boat. Take your time, make the right purchase and enjoy the ride.

It depends on what kind of riding you want to do. High speeds down curvy roads pretending you're at the race track? actually going to the race track? cruising and enjoying the view? multi-day trips? dirt roads?

If you don't know, then I'd suggest to go low budget now and find your passion and then trade in a year or two later. And/or for $20k, you could get two bikes: a crotch rocket that you won't crash now that you're older and wiser and a more upright cruiser for leisurely rides...

I'm 38 and love my 600 Shadow!!! It's a fun bike and it's tough as nails too. Mine has been in dozens of drops and 2 tumbles and it's still running strong and tracks straight.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I did the crotch rocket thing 30 years ago and had my fall. I'm now looking for something to just get out around town for the heck of it because TV just sucks these days. When I get more comfortable again, I can take the wife with me. Nothing too big, I have narrowed it down to either a used RK (10,000 to 12,000) limit or a Heritage same price range. I can add bags or storage once I get back into the groove of riding. I'm blowing up the ride like a pro utoob videos.

I'll be looking for a Heritage by the end of this year. They are nice looking, comfortable, and WAY cheaper than the Road Kings... plus, you can see what is directly in front of the tire, whereas the RK's front fairing blocks the view of everything directly in front of you.
