From what I have seen on TV, it looks awful to me. I would rather spend my time on a mountain road actually motorcycling.
Hey, being honest and wanted to give you at least one reply. :-) |

I appreciate the comment.
I'm honestly not as interested in the event as I am the ride. I was thinking I would ride either through the panhandle or New Mexico into Colorado. Run through the mountains to Wyoming and make my way to Sturgis. Eventually riding the black hills and going to see Mt. Rushmore. I think it would be interesting to see the spectacle of the event but not succumb to it. Kind of a one or two day thing then get back to riding south through the mountains once again. |

I'll just get up early and ride as many miles as possible before it gets too hot. Then just ride until it's too miserable to continue if I don't make my planned destination that day. I'm not doing an iron challenge so I'll stop and rest as often as needed. I always stop about every two hours anyway. I was looking at easily needing three days to get to Wyoming and Sturgis on the fourth day. If it takes an extra day then so be it. The same would apply coming back. If my calculations were correct that's about 500 miles a day on the bike. It's all relative anyway since my wife says she doesn't want me making the trip alone. If I can't find someone else to ride with I'll be sitting at home looking at pictures and maps of all the places I could have gone. |

Beware as I have heard traffic at the sites you mentioned around Sturgis gets ridiculous jammed up during bike week and not good right before and after that week either.

Sounds about like what I did with a couple of buddies in '13. Rode out to Western Colorado to hit the Million Dollar Highway, went up through Utah, Idaho and into Yellowstone through the Montana entrance. Camped a couple of nights in Yellowstone then rode out across Wyoming camping at Devil's Tower, spent one night in Sturgis, then headed home the next morning. The trip was fantastic. Sturgis was pretty "meh".
It was hot until we got into Colorado, then we ended up seeing ~38F overnight lows regularly. That difference in temp was pretty shocking. |
