Looking for a pickle surprise, where to stay?

Going to fly into Phoenix, spend the night there then drive through Sedona on our way to Grand Canyon. Just wanted to see if someone can give me some tips on where to stay at Grand Canyon. We're more interested in the outdoors/hiking/lodge on the rim accommodations vs a huge glitzy hotel.

Was considering Maswik Lodge or Bright Angel Lodge unless anyone's had a bad experience there. Trip will be the end of April so hopefully won't be cold. We're also gonna take a cruise down to Winslow for the meteor crater, then Route 66 and check out all the old shops. Any recommendations there?

We just stayed in the town of grand canyon it a few miles outside the park but there are free bus rides in and out of the park all day. There is lodging inside the park but not sure about air conditioning. Best western ftw!

You can camp at the canyon, but I'm not sure about hotels. It's been more than ten years since I've been.

Or get a mule....it's 12 or 14 miles and 3k feet I think.

Bring cash if you want a mule.

Helios,

Check this place out: http://www.bar10.com/lodge.amp

I visited this place last year when I went to Vegas. I took a plane from Vegas to a little airport (not really an airport, but a landing strip and sign). Then rode a 4-wheeler through the dessert to the canyon. There is a spot near the Ranch where you can get on a boat and ride the river. The place is beautiful and peaceful. You can drive into the ranch, but it is a drive, it is out in the "sticks". And the place is not a tourist place. In our group, there where 8 of us... no crowds.

I think they have cabins on the reservation, a little store too.

Also, it is warmer down in the canyon than on the rim.

It's not a camping trip. We wanna hit lots of places, gonna be on the road a lot.

Phoenix, Scottsdale, Sedona, Flagstaff, Winslow, Route 66.
Mainly interested in what hotel to stay that's near the canyon rim and other worthwhile things to see/do.

But if we did plan a camping trip, I'm sure that she'd be down.
As long as her iPhone didn't lose signal. Then we'd have a situation on our hands.
