I am thinking of putting a 180 on my 03 SV. I know its been done... Should I go with the 180/55 since the stock is 160/60? That should balance out the crowning some and give me a better contact patch right?

No.. Planned on using the same rim...hence why i said it should offset the crowning effect of the wider tire on the narrower rim.

me, keep it the same as stock, just put sticker rubber if you think you need it.

That's a fair assessment... After this set of track days, I may get new tires for the 03 and I figure I have another 1500 miles or so left in these for the 06 to enjoy... I don't like the Continental Road Attacks that came on the 06
As a side note.. i really like running the 120/70 on the front as opposed to the 120/60 that was stock.. |

I'd go with the manufacturer's recommended size. You're not going to make the bike "better" by using anything different. I'll bet 75% of the members can't outride a BT-016 on the street and that includes me

The change in turn in that Mike describes is more likely the result of the taller tire in the rear. As you raise the rear or lower the front, the bike turns in quicker. This improves until the bike begins to feel to twitchy at turn in.
The discussions I've seen around the 180 versus 190 on a 5.5" rim have been about the resulting shape of the tire. The debate is whether the increased curvature caused by mounting a larger tire on a smaller rim actually DECREASES the contact patch on the rear. It's definitely not the shape the tire manufacturers intended. It would be interesting to get the opinion of a racer who has tried both. I doubt that a normal street rider could push hard enough to "feel" the difference on the street. |

Well first off I don't want this to sound like I am taking about 2 wheel toys because I'm not, but I called Monday and they said if I showed up Tuesday before 5 they would change my tire, I took off work Tuesday and got 15 minutes into my HOUR AND a HALF drive to there shop and they said I had to b there by 4 because their mechanic was leaving early, happens but I work a lot and getting off early doesn't happen often... So I went to biker bay by my house and got the shinko duel compound 190(wanted a 180 but they didn't have in stock) so I will let and let u guys know if an average rider (at best) can tell much if a difference.

I'm with staying stock myself. I would think that the center would wear faster also since it would be a smaller contact patch and there would be more concentrated wear. Just a thought.
