in regards to repacking a muffler, there are a number of reasons why someone may want or need to do this. in my case, i like to alternate between fully packed, baffled but not packed, and straight pipe (open header). you can buy packing that is specifically made for the job but i use a material that is designed for lining commercial type air duct. it's called plenum liner and it works great. i just wrap the material tightly around the perforated baffle tube and secure it with masking tape. trim to length, and install.
if you ride a bike with after market exhaust long enough, it will eventually get louder as the muffler packing is blown out. so repacking a muffler is essentially to make it more effective and the exhaust tones more tolerable.

as for greasing my shifter, i had my shift lever's pivot modified. it was fitted with a brass bushing to make it fit the pivot dowel better and then a grease fitting was installed on it to allow for regular lubricating, without removing it.

and, yes, i do mix tire brands. never a problem in doing so.

Great info Pachuco, thanks, I'll mess around my bike to take a look at the muffler, I have a yoshi 3 and yeah, I don't like the loud high pitch tones. It is really helpful, hope you don't mind if I ask you something every once in a while, I'm starting to work on my own bike, so I need some info at times.

Pachuco, I was looking at what all maintenance you perform. I seen "grease shifter" care to elaborate on that? My shifter doesn't always fully come back to its normal position after shifting.

i wouldn't doubt that your shifters pivot and matching dowel, are cruddy and in need of a good cleaning and greasing. they can get very dry, rusty and/or corroded. definitely worth a look.
