Air Force Is Calling

If I was young, I would be all over this, and I don't even like war!

In the LA Times today:

U.S. Air Force facing severe pilot shortage
By W.J. Hennigan

The Air Force is so short of fighter pilots that the Pentagon is boosting its salary package to include a $225,000 signing bonus for 9-year commitments.

Isn't it extremely hard to become a pilot in the military?

Pass ASVAB with high enough scores in the right areas, pass written flight test, pass physical, pass flight physical, have a degree, pass Basic Training, pass OCS and commission as an officer, pass interview, pass PT test, spend 16-18 months going through various stages of general flight training, get assigned to a unit, spend the next few months integrating and training on the specific aircraft you'll be flying.

Last I remember you have to have

1. A Bachelor's

2. Be under 195 lbs

3. Pass a physical

4. actually want the job

So....I could see how they'd struggle finding candidates.

You passed up Alaska?!? But, that's the winter haven of the Army!

But really, at least they didn't offer Korea as an "incentive."

I volunteered for both, so they sent me to Virginia.

I would have loved a $225 bonus. I got $995/month.

I worked with a guy who's kid was in flight school..

Mentioned it was extrememly difficult to get into and the drop out rate is up there as well.

Guessing it's not easy if they're throwing cash out like that.

All I did was spell it out. In truth, they provide you with as little as possible so that you have to find out everything by yourself. They'll lose your paperwork 7-10 times. They monitor your fitness levels and diet daily, any deviation and they'll drop you from the program. They administer a G-Force test that disqualifies most people.

In terms of quality, they're looking for the best of the best who actually WANT to be a pilot. It's not a common combination, especially when you consider that most who commission want to be leaders, not pilots. Most who want to be pilots think that it's easier than it is. Out of those who meet those criteria, not all will pass since the standards are so high. They're not training airline pilots, they're training pilots who are going to be shot at and who will have to shoot back.
