It used to be done a lot. They would put a meter on a close by hydrant and fill the pool. Good luck getting it done these day. It was mainly volunteer departments doing it.

My thought is that if you can afford a new pool you should just pay the going rate for filling it up from a resource that can do that, not a fire department. I think I would be a bit upset if the fire department was being used to fill someones pool.

I was in pool business, alot of times you fill the pool up just call the water company and let them know what your doing and they will cut all that amount of water of your bill so its not through the roof

You've obviously never sat around and waited for a pool to fill. Most of us will pay for the water, even pay a premium for the water, in order to avoid the 24-48 hour fill time. It's about convenience, not free water.

I understand where you are coming from, I would think that there are companies that would have potable water to fill a pool and not use public resources to do it that could be needed for an emergency.

I don't think I would want to sit around either waiting for the pool to fill up.

Dude it's not like they say 'sorry we cant respond to a call, we're filling a pool.'

Dude. You build a pool you should take the cost of filling it into the equation. Shouldn't the contractor give you a list of of companies that can help with that. It is not like it is a public pool it is for a private citizen. If they do fill the pool they should at least charge the going rate of a private company IMO.
