I've only flown domestic with my guitars. Always traveled with it as a carry-on item on the plane with me.
Mind you that was YEARS ago and I have not flown recently with a guitar. |

I highly recommend using a travel rated case for your guitar such as Gator or SKB. Most standard hard shell cases are rather flimsy and do not properly prevent your guitar from bouncing around inside them. If you can press down on any face of your case and it has some give it may not protect your guitar from having a 20 lb suitcase landing on top of it.

lol definitely not taking my taylor. I had a less expensive guitar that I gave my wife that I might take. I didn't know you could rent guitars. Hmm.

I have not flown in almost 20 years. When I do travel my guitars never get out of my sight. I only have 3 guitars left, but I have had them awhile and plan on leaving them to my son and grandson when I die.
I still have a Gibson Les Paul Custom I bought in 1976, an Ovation that I bought in 1985 and a Martin D35 that I can not remember when I bought. I bought them all new and they still play that way. |

Pre 9/11, I flew with a Jackson RR-1 in a hard plastic flight case. Handlers put a giant hole in the case, but the instrument was fine. I’ve also flown several times post 9/11 with other electrics in SKB “TSA” flight cases, and have had nothing but good luck. My Martin acoustic came to Houston in the same stsyle SKB case, and all was well. Was only about a quarter step out of tune afterwards! Almost always have an inspection flyer in the case, after the flight, so be aware that the goons will propbably have a good look at it.
