Motorcycle registration

So I've not been riding on public roads at all, just doing trackdays. So my question is do I need to keep renewing my registration? What if I let it expire and want to register it after a couple of years because I decided to start riding on the road again? Will I be greeted with a massive fine?

I can only speak to my experience, not the letter of the law.
My bike was not registered from 2015 to 2020. When I registered the bike again I only had to sign an attestation that I had not received any citations for no registration. The renewal fee was the same as it would have been otherwise.

I think what less_than_coop says is correct, no fine.
Years ago I had to sign an affidavit that the vehicle was not used on the road while unregistered but I don't know if they still do that.

Another thought, if it doesn't seem to be working out at one location, go to another. The rules are so complicated and the employees don't know them all. I've been told at one place i couldn't transfer a street bike title and make it off road. (It was a track only GSXR750)
Went to another location and did it no problem. Saved myself hundreds in tax.

I was thinking about you when I replied. Cali even has the non-operable registration just for this. Revenue, revenue, revenue!

$5 a year for a non operation filing is not about revenue. It is about keeping registration records accurate and current. They probably lose money doing it.

Actually the law is the vehicle cannot have been operated during the lapse of registration. If it was all back registration fees are imposed and due. But they cannot prove that, so is why they only ask you if any citations during the lapse. Those are records they can access.

Ah, that's what I was looking for to help the OP out. Do you have a citation we can share with him?
I dont want him walking into the tax office misinformed.
