Yet another Introduction.

everyone!

Right, I'm Adrian.

I don't own a bike. I've always wanted one ever since I was a passenger on my friends bike (he had a CBR 600RR then). I've always put it off, but now I'm really going to do it. I'm in the planning stages of getting one and I would like something I can use to grow in as I gain riding experience. I found these forums by googling motorcycle forums in Houston lol.

So far, I've been looking at two bikes, but I'm really open to suggestions.

2009 SV650SF or a Ninja 650R. Either of those pretty decent starters?

Anyhoo, expect lots of questions from me whilst lurking. And expect many more after I get my first bike.

+1 both are great starters, have fun shopping and be sure to pick your gear with comfort in mind (don't forget that you will need to buy more when winter hits). Look forward to seeing you on the road!

Welcome to another rider!

Both are good bikes to learn on. The SV is a little more forgiving on the clutch/throttle learning curve and has a more relaxed posture. You won't outgrow either of them for quite a while.

Take the MSF course if you haven't already. You can drop their bike and don't have to see it every day after.

I heard about that and I'm looking at this now. How long does their certificate last? Will I have to take it again every x number of months?

Once you get your M endorsement it sticks, so one course of MSF is all you need unless you want to race after you get hooked on riding.

As far as buying new or used, this is what you have to understand. Almost EVERYONE will drop their bike at some point, you need to understand this, there are two types of riders, those that have been down, and those that are going to go down! There is no way around it, I bought mine new back in '02 and luckily my couple of spills happened at slow or no speed. Have not had an incident since then (knocks on wood), so is this going to be your first bike or last? There is no harm in buying a used bike just make sure to take it to a reputable shop to have it looked at before you pay for someone elses hidden problems.

I was looking at those two bikes as well for my first bike and I decided to go with the sv. Awesome bike and I love it! You won't regret it!
