for what its worth:

ive been working in the MC industry for 6, maybe 7 years now. IMO bell is a generic bobo manufacturer. i mainly see their brand at walmart and cycle queer. this is the type of company that mass produces cheap , and offers it at LOW cost to dealers. their products tend to have great margins (profit) for the dealers while also having a low MSRP. dealers assume they can sell more of them since they have a lower price and they make good profit to boot, so they carry them. you suffer.

if had been in your shoes, i would have told the dude to keep the free helmet.
my head is worth more than "free"... thanks.

i woulsnt be suprised if their specs for construction are higher quality than this, but they get made at some shady chinese factory, you the ones where they put talc in baby formula instead of the real stuff... i wouldnt trust this , i mean...seriously?

i recomend these brands as being respectable and trustworthy, so long as you are spending at least $129 on a new helmet:

imo, everything else is .

poly-carbonate doesn't break like that. It must by acrylic.

Because I've become a big fan of transition face shields, I did a little research. The idea the shield could just break like in the first post was a little spooky.
According to Motorcyclist Online most shields meet one or both of 2 standards and will be marked accordingly; Snell and VESC-8 (vehicle equipment safety commission)

Copied from an article...
There are two common face shield standards: the Vehicle Equipment Safety Commission No. 8 (VESC-8 or V-8) and Snell. The most widely used one is VESC-8 because it's referenced in many states' mandatory eye protection laws. Shields for most helmets meet VESC-8, the Snell shield requirement or sometimes both. The VESC-8 test involves optical tests and a 1.56-ounce steel projectile with a conical point striking the shield at 20 mph, which must not penetrate. Cracking or piercing is allowed as long as the projectile doesn't actually pass through or remain lodged.*

The Transitions shield on my Bell is marked with VESC-8.

Don't know what happened with the shield in the first post but I'm reasonably sure it was some kind of fluke. I feel like it's as protective as any other shield.

I had one shatter just like that. It was from a 1 foot drop that I don't think should have done anything

Exactly what I was thinking. Why would you want another product that could likely fail like the one it's replacing.

Suprised to see this come back to life. We'll never got an answer on the shield cracking. I didn't think I would though. If the admitted fault that would them open to world of bad things. I haven't gone back with a transition shield. I'm not a fan of doing something twice expecting a different outcome.
