sunset in TX
Tomorrow the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission meets in Austin to decide the fate of the Texas DPS Motorcycle Safety Unit. The commission has already recommended that the MSU be transferred to the Texas Dept of Licensing and Regulation, that it cease training instructors, cease directly training students, and that it slash its operating costs, eliminating any assistance/help to training providers. Left up in the air is what will happen to the more than $17 million sitting in the fund 501 that has been collected for years from motorcycle registration and licensing fees. Fears are that the monies will simply be absorbed into the general fund, meaning the money you've paid in to cover training and awareness campaigns will be stolen for other purposes.
Training providers squeak by now with very little profit, and having all assistance removed will probably put many, if not most, out of business unless the current fee cap is removed. As training is mandatory, expect training tuition rates to skyrocket if that happens. There's govt in action for you: increase costs to the public, screw over small businesses and in general do more harm than good, all in the name of "saving money." Money which, by the way, is not theirs to begin with. Stay tuned. This is going to get interesting. |

And the beat goes on
Things are moving ahead with sunsetting the Motorcycle Safety Unit. A call is being conducted this evening with a Texas senator who may be able to help us out. We'll be watching, listening and speaking, loudly.
Yes, it's a crock. But if we're lucky, maybe we can salvage almost $20 million and keep a vital program going. Stay tuned. |

More info needed.
What can possibly happen (in your opinion) to new motorcycle applicants if this gets filed 13’d? |

There will still be courses and license. Most the the changes will mainly effect Sponsors and Coaches. HOPEFULLY there will be minimal impact on riders.
I too am wondering what will happen with our funds... |
