Well that's beyond anyone's personal opinion when it won't pass inspection at the races.
But it will look good on the wall... I wish I had the money...

Yes.. because everyone on a motorcycle participates in sanctioned races right??... i have done plenty of searching and research to find anyone outside of helmet manufacturers that claim and have done testing that helmets must be replaced after 5 years.. some manufacturers say it's 5 years after the production of the helmet and some of them say it's five years after the helmet is first worn. Thus leading me to believe that wearing the helmet has something to do with the helmet wearing out. But again that is straight from the manufacturer and people echoing the manufacturer.. not a single person including the manufacturer has produced any sort of study or proof or real world testing that proves that this magical 5-year limit actually means anything other than they want to sell another helmet. If you can produce some testing from an independent organization (or from the manufacturer) testing helmets showing that helmets degrade to the point they won't do their job ,
then do tell. Do they degrade 90% , 10%, 2%.. I have searched for hours and then some trying to find anything. So far everything is just hearsay and going by what the manufacturer says without any sort of proof whatsoever (even from the manufacturers). I could be wrong and I'm willing to change my mind with legit proof. I had a feeling this conversation was going to happen on this website. So please slap your head act like I'm an idiot. If I had proof that a helmet was garbage after 5 years I wouldn't sell one. Yes yes I have heard everyone's reasoning on how they want to explain the manufacturers decision of 5 years. But it's all a guessing game as far as I can tell so far. I do find it quite ironic that every manufacturer seems to say the exact same thing and in how many years and how good the technology is nobody can seem to go past 5 years. I would put money on it being more along the lines of wear and tear versus the magical 5 years.. but still would like to see real world testing, not this "polymers break down and such.. of course they do.. but to what extent? If a given helmet will do 99% of what it would have done after its 15 years old.. does that mean its worthless?. Pretty sure it's just a money grab for the most part. I'm waiting on manufacturers to put a limit on suits as well.. leather gets brittle and falls apart all by itself after a while dont ya know.. But you know..

https://www.bikebandit.com/blog/how-...orcycle-helmet. Clearly the rule is only applicable to a helmet that is worn regularly. Shelf Queens are exempt. That being said, I wouldn't buy a used helmet because they really cant be cleaned. Kind of like buying used underwear.

Manufacturer vs the race club regulations are to be taken differently IMO.
The race club don't know how the helmet has been used and they only have the date of fabrication to go with.
I also don't understand why the club don't inspect the suit and back protector either?
It's ridicules how many times I've seeing people being aloud on the track with their suits being duct taped all over the place
I guess that's why we sign a weaver?
Like I said... I wish I had the money. It's beautiful for sure!

I have read such articles. Read them carefully. They use words such as "possibly".. all indications lead to the fact that they have never done real world testing.. they don't know exactly how much it degrades. All that they know is that things can degrade. I won't argue that point. So based on that they make the Assumption of everything else that they proclaimed without actually doing anything aside from guessing..

I won't say that helmets are infinite and can be used as long as they exist. I'm sure that they do have a lifespan just like motorcycle suits and gloves and boots. Five years though is an imaginary number that they just conjured up and said " here you go".

I apologize rod. I wasn't really directing any of this at you. I just knew whenever I put this helmet up for sale on this site that this discussion was coming. I'm sure I was being somewhat defensive. Anything I said was just for the discussion in general

My concern would be degradation of the foam that absorbs the impact over time due to temp, water absorption, etc, but I have worn many a helmet past 5 years, who cares.

Lets get back on track, that helmet represents a bad racer that I named my first born after and he was a stand up redneck!

GLWS!
