TAX/TITLING QUESTION... IS THERE A WAY AROUND IT?

Just bought a used bike and just like everyone else Im not looking forward to paying the taxes on it when I go to change the title over. You used to be able to say a vehicle was a "gift" and pay only a $10 fee but I think they changed all that. Anyone have any info.?

yeah if you tell them that the bike is below a certain value they will tax you for what the computer says its worth.... unless you have a certified dealer appraise it at a lower value than what they say it is worth... so if you know someone who is a motorcycle dealer you could have them appraise it for what its "really" worth.....

they do not care what you paid, they look at book value and you pay tax based on that value.

My mom does title work. And she said the previous statement was correct. They go by a bare minimum value. There is a website that will calculate the exact amount I dont know it off the top of my head.... Sorry Google Harris county vehicle tax, i think that should work

so you cant have a dealer appraise it? what if its a bike worth $12 thats been wrecked up pretty bad and your just looking to fix it up?

any dealer can give you an appraisal... is the bike not worth what they say it is or are you just trying to scam the system??

there is a form that they will fight to not give you at the office as if it was going to cause the clerk to lose her own money... but it will have to be filled out by a cert. dealer

i need to see what they assess the tax at but im sure its going to be far more than what i paid for the bike. i got a pretty good deal on it.

yes! i got the gift affidavit and was just gonna say the fellow i bought the bike from was my stepfather but in tiny writing at the bottom of the form it reads that its a third degree felony under tax code 152.101 to sign a false statement. i dont break the law, just trying to move around it a bit..

When I got my second bike transferred to my name, I asked the lady that same question in the tax office. Basically she told me that there are two things they look at. The price you paid, and the current value of the bike. She didn't say if it was like a kelly blue book value, but I'm guessing they use something similar. They will then tax you off the price that is higher, whether it is price you paid for, or how much it currently is on the market. And yes, "gifts" are now limited to immediate family members only.
