I knew a lot of 390 owners that were plenty happy with their bikes... AND they sound really good with aftermarket exhaust

I recommend the Ninja as well. I too narrowed down my choice of bike for the KTM 390 and The Ninja 400. I went with the Ninja because of reliability, comfort and color. I have over 10k miles on my 2018 and I'm still in love with it. I would post pics of it here, but it's slightly inconvenient. So, here is my IG page that showcases my Ninja in action. I believe I have some video that showcase the Two Brothers Black Series slip on I installed. Sounds quite beautiful imo.

A 390 just popped up on offer up. Asking 4k with 8k miles. You should just go for the ninja.

lol hey woah there buddy, don't get the ktm. you'll have a of a time selling it after you get tired of things breaking, things that should be recalls, but arent, or possibly the expensive "comfort" seat that's only slightly less stiff than the stock seat.
former duke 390 owner here. the engine had some massive failure and the dealership wouldnt fix it under warrantee. im not sure what the exact problem was, they never told me. maybe head gasket failure, maybe the water pump? idk. the bike had about 8000 miles on it and i was coming home from a trip out to the hill country when it blew. i had kept up on the break in maintenance visits and wasnt running the out of the engine or anything.
the duke 390 was very fun up until the engine issue.

Yikes. I was only aware of the stiff suspension and uncomfy ride..wasn't aware of all of that.

yikes. well, good luck! a buddy of mine got the rc390 right after i got the duke. he only had to take it in for a couple of issues. the fan broke, and the expensive comfort seat never fit. after mine blew up and the warranty was worthless, his got stolen, and he said it was a relief. he said he was glad to not have to go through all the bs i just went through.

i'll never stop being salty over that bike and the way the dealership handled the warranty.
also, if you do need warranty work done, patrick at Motorcycles Unlimited had told me i should have gone to see him. i mean, he told me this months after i got rid of the bike lol

It's a hit or miss thing. Some owners never have problems, some have the engine go poof in less than 3,000 miles. Ask your local pastor to pray for you. I had the ninja 400 and was pleased with it.

As an aside, I would recommend the CBR500R over both the others. Except for the track, it outcompetes the other two in scratching all of my itches.

Haha...I ride with a guy that has the CBR500r. He wishes he got the Ninja 400 as my Ninja out performs his 500, even regarding the top speed!

Yep, like I said, it outcompetes at the track, though quibbling about the difference between ~109mph and ~119mph is just self . The RC390 beats both, so if you really want to brag about being a trackie in the low CC group, you'll have to put up with the engine grenade.
