Group Riders Read This! - The Pace

I am semi new to riding on the street. I am always learning something when hugging a corner at 70+mph. I ride with a fellow that has track experience and taught me alot. I am still learning. Been riding street since May of last year. Anyone up for riding let me know. I try to go every weekend when time permits.

Ever drive in a car and when you come up to a nice set of curves or hills? THAT's when you know and start feeling the rhythm. I got carried away when we went out to ccr, probably because I am not used to riding with other sportbikes (mostly cruisers and choppers and SERIOUS twisties!) So the Crab looked like a practice toy compared to what I was used to, I was trying to keep pace with the experienced crr riders and everytime I hit those snakes in the curves it would really upset my bike and damage my calm (plus I need new tires) so eventually I dialed back, but not enough to stop noticing their effect in my corners.

The "Pace" isn't for the track. It is how to enjoy the back roads at a less than track day pace. It is all about finding the perfect speed for the road you are on so you don't have to brake at all.

One other thought...

Your lane is your world. On the street, there is no room for errors or margins.. no wide grass or sand run off, no hay bales, EMS or corner workers.

At NO TIME on any back road or public street should you be going too fast to stay in your lane. Running wide, cutting lanes in corners.. plain and simple indicator you are going too fast for your skill level and need to slow down.

Txlurch that is so true that is exactly what I learned rolling in these different groups I let them know before hand, that Im new to sportbike world I learned on a goldwing so they know I might fall behind, just don't leave me is all I ask they all been cool with it.

I find it difficult to stay with these guys doing 180 on the 610 lap. I have taken away that the right lane is the lane to be in coming in to the curves and staying in that lane long after. Along with a whole bunch of other tid bits included in your posing and I thank you for that. I am not a new rider but riding this hard is new. I have been practicing precoution rather than getting a taste of the pavement. Even with me trying to be as safe as I have been, I did have a spill at 70 cus someone in red convertible hit the brakes in front of me way to hard. It is what it is lesson learned.

Man this post makes me wanna learn more about cornering! I'm 19 and I've been riding for like 2 months so I really don't feel comfortable leaning really hard on the kawi. I'm always down for improvement on my riding. I live in the back roads and slowly I'm trying to incorporate what I read off of mh into every ride. Thanks for the tips!!

Get to the track...with a good instructor and controlled environment, even a cave man can become a good rider..

I've found that running at a pace I am comfortable with allows me to actually feel what my bike is doing. You begins to understand what they mean in articles about front end feel and such. As I slowed my pace a little, I could "feel" the front end as it went over different surfaces while in the corners. Nothing like that unsuspecting slide feeling when going over tar snakes at speed in Texas summer.


Just a thought, if anyone has the "Twist of the Wrist" series on DVD, maybe a group meet could be arranged to watch them. It'd a way to get to know each other and learn some new things.

Really good stuff. I recently went on a good ride with thayleal this passed weekend.

It was really informative. I think anyone wanting to learn more about riding and becoming a better and safer rider should periodically check events and rides for noob rides. From what my wife and I experienced and she was my passenger, we learned alot.

Strongly recommended by me.
