Investment Banking

Who can give me the skinny on Investment Banking?

Preferably someone who actually knows what they're talking about.

I'm waaaaay to lazy here at work to Google anything.

I'm not sure what kind of information you are looking for, but I'm in the McCombs School of Business at UT Austin. I have plenty of friends that are finance majors (many finance majors go into IBanking). I've also been to a lot of Ibanking faculty forums and company info sessions. So I may be able to answer a few questions.

Eh, I was just curious of what exactly they do.

From what I've gathered so far, most of them are finacial analysts/advisors for brokerages and corperations. Others are aides for people looking to buy stocks/bonds/trusts etc.

The biggest thing that caught my eye was the average salary for an investment banker. Holy ba-gezzus.........

They make all that money, but they have absolutely no time to spend it. The ones working for the top companies work 16-20 hour days for years on end until they are either promoted to partner level or burn out and quit. (Most do end up falling in the latter category.) It is a very stressful job that I am sure lessens their life expectancy.

Also, job outlook it not good for Ibankers for the next year or two. Most of my graduating finance major friends are ending up in consulting jobs or spending an extra year in school in order to try to wait out the storm.
