+1 Before I moved in my house I thought HOAs were pretty evil. I pay $400 a year and mine isn't petty at all. I've done all kinds of customizations to my property, some of which bend the rules. But they don't seem to mind since it improves the look of the community. We have 24/7 Sheriff patrols and they are pretty speedy and reasonable when it comes to complaints along with a bunch of other stuff.

I paid annually (my old place) $800.00.

They will lien your shitzle if you dont pay.

HOA's are a good thing if properly managed. Street lights, road repairs, landscape maintenance (common areas) etc.
If it wasnt disclosed at closing, you dont have to pay.

True. But I am purdy sure somewhere something was signed. The cousin probably signed it and failed to relay that info to the thread starter. That would be a HUGE oversight on the title company's part if they missed that.

Wish someone would buy me a house! I'd glady pay whatever the HOA dues were! Of course unless the neighbor had roosters and t in the front yard next to the pop up camper in the driveway and the cutless sittin on blocks!

i hate our HOA, they like to brag about how much good they've done and how they stop rule breakers, but really the only 'rulebreaking' was one neighbor who grabbed his boat the evening before a fishing trip so he could leave right in the morning. Quite frankly they can go choke on a and die, because they really don't do anything but deal with petty like that instead of doing a stake out for the kids who shove plastic forks in lawns with the teeth facing upward, wrap houses, key cars and egg/beat mailboxes in the neighborhood.

your right,i went through all the paperwork and he did sign everything and when i talked to him he said that he didnt reed anything as he was too "busy" for that. "its your house now, take care of it or sell it and move" is what he said. Im not trippin though i guess if it for the good then ill have to play by the rules.. my neighbor has been cutting my grass for me..guess ill have to get one of those mower things to
