Cooler radio

Have any of you built an ice chest radio that can still hold ice/water? If so what did you use to section off for electrical equipment and what battery, amp, and speakers did you use?

Built one before.... looking back for my needs a waterproof ipod radio of some sort would of been a better choice.... Where will you be using it? Floating river?

Better put all the audio stuff in a block of epoxy. Condensation is gonna kill it quick.

Tried it. and went back. It was terrible trying to lug around a 70qt cooler that was heavy as . Went back to a rolling dedicated radio cooler and since I'm bringing tunes, buddies will extra fill their ice chests with beer.

I will be using it for floating the river, and other outdoor events that call for music and beer. I bought a 165 at with big wheel that fold underneath and 1/2" plexiglass to divide. You think the moisture will mess up the waterproof speaker and amp set. No need for a head unit cause the amp comes with a mp3/ipod cable for hooking straight to the amp.

I'll say this....mine is heavy enough with just the head unit and battery, let alone ice and beer. It's also loud enough to hear with a group of 10-20 floating around....unless, you get some douche in a kayak with a 70 qt ice chest, two car batteries and a 400w amp.

I also utilize the MP3 audio output more often than playing a cd b/c the head unit creates heat and causes the unit to skip. When floating the river everyone wants a dry place to store cigs, wallets, lighters, and whatever else....works out just fine letting others carry my beer. Good luck with your build!

CD's ALWAYS skip if your system is loud enough (vibration). I use an old ipod, I know works well though, and it sits in a plastic baggy that is hooked to the side off the bottom.

Stay away from subs/HUGE amps as they create alot of heat and drain battery.

My 2 6x9 and 2 4.5, with a 52x4 head-unit, lasted right over 8 hrs at the last River Raft Race I attended using a battery that would go into a small sedan. Forgot CCA though. BRACE the battery if you are taking it on the river.

better double check the new ordinances where you will be going.. floating the river in san marcos was really strict this past yr. no plastics, music withing 15 ft range iirc, cooler size limit which includes the radio cooler. the "no plastics" rule is dumb as since all water containers are most likely going to be plastic. next time i go i will have to bring two camel backs, one for water, and the other for w/e else i can drink haha

Finaly got back in town and finished my project. It looks and sounds awesome. The batt has lasted 14 hours so far while charging two phones and lights on and was still running strong until I turned it off to recharge it for a party. Had ice in it for over 24hrs without moisture making it to the amp.
