Bummed or Burned?

All week I've looking forward to checking out this $400 "original" Z1. Supposedly ran within the past year, and had been under a tarp behind a guys garage.

So a buddy happened by it and says it is supposed to be a '78 or '70 KZ900. Well, that would not be an "original" Z1, matter of fact, not even a 900. But it still sounds like a good find and something worth restoring fo just $400. My buddy says the guy may take like $200 for it even.

So anyway, we go by there this morning, camera and note book in hand. there it is, very well wrapped under a blue tarp. I anxious walk towards it fumbling with the zip ties and bungee cords hold the tarp down and ..........drum roll............ wait for it.................

........Not a Z1, Not a 900 and not even a 1000

Its a '84 KZ550 shaft drive

Here's this dude standing in his underwear, trying to tell me its an 1100 I show him the casting mark on the block, "0.553L". He insist that its an 1100 and that I look at the ID tag on the steering stem, "KZ550 EF". He is in total disbelief, but cannot dispute the written evidence. He quickly drops his $500 asking price to $200. I told him I would have gladly given him $500 for any 1100, 1000 or 900 Kawasaki, but this 550 is nothing more than a 500 pound paper weight.

Do you make a habit of purchasing bikes from guys in their underwear? Nevermind, you're from OK
