Is it still common practice to replace tires based on age even though they are still in great condition visually?

Depends on how and where they were stored. Also how lold they are.

Yes it is. The rubber will get harder as time goes on. Ive heard something along the lines of 6 yrs for the life of motorcycle tires. Like r6racer said this can be different based on where they where stored.

Say they are on a bike and the bike is used off and on. No signs of cracking.

Look for the molded in DOT number on the sidewall. The last four numbers will tell you the week and year of manufacture. 3412 would indicate the tires were built in the thirty fourth week of 2012. If in doubt get new ones especially for a sport bike ridden with "gusto". Cheap insurance!

I'm currently running a 9 year old Dunlop on the rear. It was stored in a garage. There are dry rot cracks (minor) in the depths of the tread grooves but not on the contact areas. It's harder than I thought it would be but no worse than A high mileage touring tire.

When I got my B-King it had tires with 90% tread but they were 5 years old. They tires didn't offer that much grip at all. The first thing I did was buy new tires for it with a fairly new production date. I guess it depends on how you ride, but I like to feel as safe as possible.

If I were to go down, I don't want to have that lingering thought that I could have avoided this, but I was to cheap.

Never go cheap on your tires for that matter. Safety is key. Average tire on a sports bike in my experience is between 3 to 6k miles depending on tire brand, composite, how hard you ride, etc. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong of course. I'm just speaking from my own experiences.

running a 12 yr old Avon...but I rarely get over 30mph riding 1 mile to work...suppose it is ok?

i rode on old tires when i got my first bike no telling how old but no cracks. we went out to the sisters and rode after one loop the whole right side of the front tires was completely bald. happened so fast. i had to just put around the rest of the trip

Haha, when I got my Venture the rear tire was 17 years old, according to the date code. Great tread, no signs of dry rot, and with as hard as the tire was it probably would've lasted another 10. Got rid of that thing immediately for something fresh.

I'm looking at a 2009 Rocket III up here at a Dealer that he took in on a trade... Still has the OEM tires on the bike with 3600 miles on them... I asked for a "drive out price" WITH two (2) tires installed..... salesman looked at me and said the tires on the bike only had 3600 miles on them... "they should be good..." Some people just don't have a clue...

Nah, leave that old rear tire on there for an epic burnout in the parking lot, then have them install a new one before you leave.

Just chiming in here to say I replaced the six year old tires on the SV I just bought even though the bike was stored in a dudes living room. Tires are, by far, the most important safety component of your bike and I take no risks.

My rule of thumb: new bike? Tires 5 years or older get replaced regardless. Otherwise ride till they start to give or show excessive wear.
