Safe passage ordinance

The Houston City Council has passed a so called “Safe-Passage” ordinance which will fine vehicles that get within specific distances -- three feet for cars and six feet for trucks -- of vulnerable people on the roadway. The ordinance took effect immediately.

I am all for keeping people safe but this is a bullshit revenue law. Plus does a cop have to see it .. or does the person report your license place number?

It is one thing to purposely crowd someone ... but do I have to follow a bicycle for 3 blocks because there are 2 cars parked on the side of the road making it impossible not to break this law? Again.. something that sounded great on paper but they failed on the practical application part.

Cars DO give more space when a bicycle has a 3ft pole sticking out from the bars.
Amazing how much concern people for themselves/their property.

I dont have anything against bicycles, i ride everyday. I do have something angainst BS laws that are practicly impossible to prove, unless the officer is directly in front or behind you. Is there an influx of bicyclist being run over? I see an influx of bicyclist that dont know the rules of the road. Riding the wrong direction, riding more than two abreast, and just riding like an idiot in general. All this is just a money grab and a chance to tickle the fancy of Ms. Porkers constituents.

That's a really good way to get an object lesson in physics.

If bicycles rode where and how they are supposed to this law wouldn't be an issue. However, since cyclists tend to ignore such things as bike lanes, and just traffic laws in general....

It isn't that we hate cyclists, we just hate that you're mostly a bunch of arrogant prigs who seem to think courtesy only goes one way. Critical Mass come to mind? Rudest thing I've ever seen and cyclists think its perfectly OK.

I can tell you first hand, as a law abiding cyclist... drivers don't give a how you ride before crowding you. The last thing I want to do is give a driver a reason/excuse to be an , there's already plenty of them out there.

Not all cyclists like CM.

Too much stereotyping and assumptions.

Sounds like u are the exception, most cyclists, think they own at least 1/2 the road I am very respectful of the law abiding ones, but the ones that are riding in the middle of the lane for no reason, I will buzz there azz

I am not hating on bicycles just a BS law. It gets old dodging people on bikes riding at you in the wrong direction on a busy street where neither of you have an escape route. And yes I think its bullshit that a slower vehicle (pedal powered or engine powered) is not yielding or moving over to faster traffic which I believe is a law in Texas "slower vehicles move right".

I see cyclists on real busy roads during 5pm traffic, like on the beltway feeder. Props to them for having of steal cuz no way in I would do it. just cuz u have the right doesn't mean it is smart. Just like a motorcyclist u can be dead right. I'm nice to them on the road but first ticket I get for this dumbass law and I'm doing top gun tower fly bys on them.

Have your fun. Don't think for a moment about the people you're causing to be late to work, late picking up their kids (which costs a shitload of money), or who cannot get to the hospital in a timely manner due to an emergency and end up dying or suffering additional harm.

It is the people who don't follow this law that me off. The one guy actually training, and keeping up a decent pace, doesn't bother me.

It's the group of 10 taking up an entire lane who spent $10,000 on gear and average a 6mph pace on flat roads on a 3 mile ride.

Quote:
(c) Persons operating bicycles on a roadway may ride two abreast. Persons riding two abreast on a laned roadway shall ride in a single lane. Persons riding two abreast may not impede the normal and reasonable flow of traffic on the roadway. Persons may not ride more than two abreast unless they are riding on a part of a roadway set aside for the exclusive operation of bicycles.
I ride my bike on the sidewalk or grass for this reason, I know I can't keep up with traffic.

I was pretty sure a bike can't split cars... aka "filtering".
Can't share... doesn't matter who is going faster.
