Great Read, but it's hard to definitely find a happy medium.

Those are made for riding bikes as they don't tend to wear out as quickly as jeans would when a rider is sliding.

Yeah, when I crashed back in June I slid on my back/ for some distance, I'd guess I was going between 50-60 when I got thrown off the bike (head shake in a turn). Was just wearing Old Navy jeans, and they did a good job of holding together. My knee where I hit initially got quite a bit of rash that would've been easily avoided by wearing the knee/shin guards that I had in my saddle bag at the time. That seam above the rear pockets was just starting to come apart when I stopped sliding, and the only rash I had on my back side was between my jeans and jacket, where my jacket rode up a bit. I don't imagine you want me to post pics of that, but I can if you're curious.

I received rashes, cuts, and bruises equal or far worse riding the trails on a mountain bike doing 10-15 mph... I'd say 30-40 mph could well cause some severe injuries if you land the wrong way. , slipping on wet tile has cause far more damage to some!

Nothing will protect you from going down, you just have a better chance of walking away if you gear up properly.
