Exclamation so many riders, so few helmets..Lex and Hwy 6 SL

MH,

So many riders out today and so few wearing helmets/gear!

https://trafficsafety.org/safety/shar...for-all-riders

My guess on todays ride: no more than 25-30% of riders wearing any safety equipment. Bike types were highly variable.

Yep, it is over 80F, so deal with it besides riding with a t-shirt, shorts and flip flops. Rant over. Given that--Hwy 6 and Lexington is a huge jam, and Hwy 6 due to a big accident at 3 pm (?) or so. Geez Hwy 6 is not my favorite stretch in the "bubble" itself.

Gear up folks!

I think the HD dealer in Stafford may skew the helmet ratio in Sugar Land. I see a lot of Harley riders without helmets. They must think like I used to.... "I am just going a few blocks so is it really necessary?" That was how I thought until seeing in just the last 6 months two fully geared riders go down. Neither was going more than 30mph and both were within 3 blocks of starting the ride. Both slides were between 30 and 60 feet. Neither had time to brake either. One remarked "As I heard the helmet face grinding along the concrete I thought... Man am I glad I am wearing a full face helmet!!!"

One more point... even at 30 mph both would have had serious road rash without gear. One further mentioned he would add knee armor to his kevlar lined jeans.

The majority of accidents happen under 40 mph and within 10 miles of the house.

I watched a guy walk 5 feet, fall down, and go into a coma the next day. Helmets, event when walking from bar to bar.

Encountered a group this past saturday. 6 of them, all with 650+ while I'm just sitting on the turning lane on my little 250 (still a newbie), pulls up to the light, sarcastically tells me "hey, nice bike" and while the light was still red, all of them rev'd up n wheelie'd through the intersection simutaneously. All of them were wearing shorts, flip flops, and tshirts only. I guess those are the types that give us all a bad name?

I was raised in a biker family...no one had a helmet...
I was the first one to get one and that was in 1967...
the first in my family to get killed on his bike was my cousin and he was wearing a helmet...
I have been riding since 1964 and i got my first helmet for riding a local dirt track in 1967, it was a track requirement, and the only requirement they had...
When i was in the service they required you to wear a helmet when you rode on base...then states started passing helmet laws, so i rode for a few years with a helmet... moved back to texas and dealt with it for awhile, then the law changed and i rode for years with no helmet... figured if i went down i wanted to die and not be a vegitable for someone to take care of...
on my harleys I kept a half lid in my saddle bags and wore it if it started raining or if i was in town in heavy traffic...
did not buy a quality helmet until august 2011 when i bought the cbr and started doing trackdays... i do not ride much street, but when i do now, i always wear a full face helmet, jacket, boots and gloves. I was not raised in a helmet wearing culture, so i was in my 60's before it became part of my way of doing things.
