They can be aggressive, but are generally harmless.

First snake I've ever had come after me rather than back off

Just been reading some articles on goggle, all say the same, very aggresive....
It was shaking its tail like a rattler does too but without the rattle..

Yeah, I had one chase my wife last year in the yard.

Back in Victoria (texas that is) they used to get into my chicken coop and raise holy .

Yep. Texas rat snake, for sure. More commonly called a chicken snake, though. Aggressive but harmless. You'll hurt yourself far more trying to get away from them than they could ever hurt you.

Defense mechanism, mimicking a rattle snake. Shaking the tail in dry leaves sounds almost exactly like a rattler.

You should be shot for killing that poor defenseless snake.

I had one of those in my yard a couple of weeks back. I went to open the hose spicket and the thing jumped at me. I stunned it, put it in a plastic jug and threw it in the trash can.
I am not into killing (it was still alive) animals, but when you attack me for no reason (I didn't provoke it) and I have a wife and two small kids to worry about...you go out with the trash.
In case you ask... going through my hazmat yard awahile back and found a rattle snake. I had woken it up, but since it didn't get aggressive (or challenge me) with me, I picked it up and released it off base.

like rats much? Snakes are great at rodent control.

Next time, use a stick to pin it behind it's head and grab it very firmly just behind the head like you see on TV. Then you can throw it in a pillowcase or plastic bin and let it go somewhere.

I have done this with copperheads, rattlers and cotton mouths

We really need the rodent control.

I hear you but I wouldn't want to pick up any snake I couldn't ID,
as a rule I just let them go on their way

We had one come after my wife in a parking lot when we lived in an apartment in Austin... seemed like the weirdest thingat the time. Bit her on the ankle, and of course we didn't realize at the time that it was harmless...
