dammit DSL!!

went from comcast to basic dsl to save some money. speed isnt as good as cable obviously, but i cant complain. my rant is about the 'installation'. when i got cable, i hooked up the modem, put in the ethernet cable and BOOM! IM ON THE WWW! can you do that with dsl? nooooooooooooooooo. gotta go through this whole stupid process (which took about an hour and a half) of installing their bullshit software, register THIS, put in info for THAT, and then the still wouldnt work. finally had to call up tech support. he was like "are you still using windows95?". im like "fukc you Habib! just get my working!". /rant.

That sucks. I was gonna call Comcast on Monday to cancel my service, then go to dsl. I already went to DirectTV and am looking for a dsl provider.

It can be done - there are instructions on the net to make a Yagi out of a Pringels can. A Yagi is like a very directional antenna, you would have one on the sending end and one on the receiving end. There are claims of distances up to 50 miles from little home routers using these Yagis.

Line of sight is a concern though - you have to have a clear shot, trees and any other objects in the way can screw the signal up.

Most routers made for residential aren't going to go a block out of the box, and if they do, reception will be sporadic at best. And remember, even if your router CAN talk that far, the other device has to be able to talk that far too.
